Description: Black and white Edward Mendel image of an early campaign portrait of Republican presidential candidate Abraham Lincoln. The bust portrait is based on Samuel M. Fassett's October 1859 photograph of the Illinois Republican. Below it is a small allegorical vignette of an eagle with a shield, holding a streamer with the words "State Sovereignty" and "National Union." Beyond the eagle are a locomotive and train (left) and a steamboat (right). Holzer ("The Lincoln Image") reproduces another, larger campaign portrait of Lincoln issued by Mendel in June 1860.
